Cedar Glen Lodge & Rustic Lounge – North Tahoe’s hidden gem

IN THE ‘60S, OUR FAMILY WOULD vacation regularly on Tahoe’s North Shore. We have fond memories of the rustic-style cottages; white, sandy beaches; crawdad fishing from the piers; and splashing and swimming in the lake.

Over the years, some of the North Shore cottages and cabins became worn down and disappeared altogether. But others have been wonderfully restored or completely rebuilt with modern amenities, so a new generation of travelers can enjoy the same “Old Tahoe” experience.

Nowhere is the revitalization more visible than at Cedar Glen Lodge in Tahoe Vista. The cottages were built in 1950 and a two-story building was added in the ‘60s to accommodate guests for the Olympic Games in Squaw Valley.

The sweeping grounds include lake and beach access just across the street. Since becoming the owner three years ago, Martha Bryan has returned Cedar Glen to its glory days—and more. Cedar Glen includes a heated swimming pool, hot tub, swimming pool, sauna, fire pit, picnic areas, Adirondack chairs, barbecues, nightly campfire (with free S’mores), volleyball court, ping pong, and even a putting green—all on a marvelously landscaped one-acre site with a manicured lawn.

The rooms and cabins are newly renovated, with many featuring fireplaces, full kitchens, bathtubs and flat screen TVs. Some rooms have breathtaking lake views. Last May, a new lobby building was built with a grand stone fireplace, wine bar and fine dining restaurant.

The Rustic Lounge at Cedar Glen Lodge features seasonal offerings ranging from classically inspired entrees to festive fusions.

Chef Ana Bryan and Pastry Chef David Meade, graduates of Le Cordon Bleu in L.A., run the restaurant.

They have created an eclectic menu. Starters include thick-cut truffle fries, blistered shishito peppers and seared bay scallops.

Mains include roasted free-range chicken breast; pan-seared salmon (with orange beurre blanc) and filet mignon. Dessert includes a dark chocolate tart and Vacherin (kiwi, berries and pink guava chantilly). The menu is here.

The restaurant is proving popular with visitors and locals. “Great food, ambiance and service at this hidden gem,” as one reviewer said.
