Broad Street Inn in Nevada City for weekend getaway

NEVADA CITY IS A PERFECT GETAWAY this time of year. It is one of the best places to view fall foliage, and its Victorian Christmas celebration in December evokes memories of an earlier era.

Now the historic gold-rush town has a new inn: The Broad Street Inn, set in the heart of the historic downtown. The inn, originally built in 1870, is a beautiful Victorian at the top of Broad Street, just a short walk to shopping, dining, theater and wine tasting.

“We provide clean, comfortable affordable lodging—a home away from home,” says Valerie Moberg, who owns the six-room inn along with her husband, Steve. Rates are reasonable: $100 weekdays/$110 weekends.

Some travelers find Victorian inns too “dated” inside — but not the Broad Street Inn: It’s fresh, bright and cheerful, with all the modern amenities. Each room has a queen sized bed, all-cotton bedding, flat-screen TV, free wi-fi and a private bathroom with a tub and shower, all-natural bath products and a hair dryer. Local art is displayed throughout the inn.

A comfortable sun porch offers coffee and tea all day. The inn also has a refrigerator, microwave and toaster for its guests.

The atmosphere is more casual than a B&B, with no set breakfast—a joy for late sleepers or more independent travelers. Coffee, tea, fresh-made muffins, hot oatmeal and fruit is available self-serve style.

Unlike most downtown inns or B&Bs, Broad Street Inn has expansive outdoor space that is well landscaped with dogwoods, maple and liquid amber trees—now ablaze in fall colors.

The outdoor space includes two backyard patios for guests to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. One of the backyard patios has a new fire pit. There’s also an old-fashioned front porch.

The inn will be decked out for the holidays, with a Christmas tree cut from the foothills, and hot mulled cider and wine.

The inn is eco-friendly, practicing recycling and energy conservation. “Whenever possible we like to line-dry our sheets,” says daughter Sydney, who helps out with the inn. We find that touch remarkably comfortable too.

The Moberg’s are longtime area residents and can offer advice about sightseeing, outdoor adventures and wine tasting. There’s a big garage downstairs that can hold your mountain bikes or kayak.

“We really enjoyed the friendly owners, beautifully decorated rooms and great backyard that made us feel welcome,” says one guest.
